Choose the right kite spot for your kite course
Not every spot is equally suitable for beginners. Here are a few points to consider during your research.
For the best learning experience, keep these three things in mind:
- Shallow water: Kite spots with flat water that reaches up to your hips at most, making it easier to take off
- Constant wind: Ideally 15–20 knots, no gusty winds
- Open space and as much room as possible: No bathers or obstacles that could distract or hinder you while learning
Popular beginner spots include Fehmarn, Sylt, and Rügen (Germany), El Gouna (Egypt), Le Morne (Mauritius), Fuerteventura (Spain), and Dakhla (Morocco). You can also find more kite spots suitable for beginners in our kite spot search.

Look for certified kite schools: Quality makes the difference
It's best to look specifically for kite schools that are VDWS or IKO certified – this guarantees you structured training, safe learning, and well-trained instructors.
In brief: VDWS stands for the Association of German Water Sports Schools – an internationally recognized training system with a focus on safety and educational quality. IKO is the International Kiteboarding Organization – the world's largest association for kitesurfing training and standards for instructors.
Ask the schools:
- the maximum group size (ideally 2-4 students) in kite courses
- Radio connection with your teacher during coaching
- Safety briefing and emergency plan
The equipment – what you really need for your first kite lesson
Most schools provide the equipment, but you should know what's involved. To learn kitesurfing, you'll need: a kite and bar, a board, a wetsuit (depending on the temperature), a harness, a safety leash, a helmet, and a life jacket.
The learning process – realistic expectations
If you get out on the water and practice every day, it's quite realistic that you 'll be able to paddle your first meters after just a few hours or days. However, the learning process is very individual and can take longer or shorter depending on the individual.
Patience is key: control, safety, and repetition come first. And, of course, have fun ;)
Trust your school, ask for feedback, and celebrate small improvements – the feeling of gliding on the water for the first time is priceless!
Basically, learning to kitesurf is easier than it looks – if you have the right place, the right school and the right attitude.
Start with a certified course, choose a good spot and let the wind carry you along.
