Mauritius – the small island in the Indian Ocean is a true paradise for anyone who loves wind, water, and nature. Constant trade winds, turquoise waters, and kite spots all around the island make Mauritius a popular kitesurfing destination.
To be honest? I hadn't really considered Mauritius for kitesurfing for a long time, and the idea of spending my kitesurfing holiday there came quite spontaneously. Looking back, I can definitely say: Mauritius combines everything that makes for an unforgettable kitesurfing trip: consistent wind conditions, diverse spots, spectacular nature, and a multitude of activities that are also exciting off the water .
The best kite spots in Mauritius
Around the island, you'll find great kite spots—for beginners, freestylers, and wave lovers alike. Here's an overview of the most popular spots:
Le Morne – probably the most famous and popular kite spot in Mauritius
Le Morne is the island's most famous spot and, for many, the reason they travel to Mauritius in the first place. The lagoon offers perfect flat water , ideal for learning and freestyle sessions. Those who love waves will find some of the best conditions in the world out on the reef – the famous waves "Manawa" and "One Eye" are spectacular, but only for experienced kiters.
The panorama with Le Brabant in the background… absolutely unforgettable!

Bel Ombre – Relaxed kiting with plenty of space
A little further south lies Bel Ombre, a spot with plenty of space on the turquoise water and a tranquil atmosphere. Ideal if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Le Morne for a day without sacrificing perfect conditions.
Be careful with the current, which can be a bit strong at this spot – don't lose your board!
Note: Directly in front of the local beach club there is a small path where you can drive directly to the parking lot at the spot.
Anse La Raie – shallow water paradise in the north
In the north of the island lies Anse La Raie – a spot particularly popular with freeriders and intermediates. The large, shallow lagoon offers perfect conditions for practice and relaxed sessions with a constant trade wind.
The wind here is mostly side-onshore, which makes for a safer ride, and the atmosphere is also much calmer than in Le Morne.
Pointe d'Esny – Crystal-clear lagoon and dream beach
This spot on the southeast coast is a real insider tip and arguably one of the island's most beautiful beaches. The lagoon is huge, and the water is incredibly clear and turquoise. However, the wind here can sometimes be a bit weaker than reported.
It's still worth a visit, even if it's just for a relaxing day at the beach.

Poste Lafayette – Original spot on the East Coast
Poste Lafayette offers a completely different atmosphere: wilder, less touristy, and often with great wind. A spot for those who like variety and enjoy discovering new things.
Thanks to Mauritius's manageable size, you can easily move between different kite spots depending on the wind direction. A rental car is definitely a good idea for this.
No wind in Mauritius? Rare – but it can happen
Calm days are rare in Mauritius, but even on those days, you're guaranteed not to get bored. The island is full of adventures and nature experiences that can be perfectly combined with a kitesurfing holiday .
Here are some of my favorite activities for no-wind days:
Hiking in the Black River Gorges National Park – through dense jungle, past waterfalls and with magnificent views over the island.
Tamarind Falls (7 Cascades) – beautiful hike from waterfall to waterfall, cooling off included.
Mare aux Joncs Waterfall – a bit remote, but that's precisely what makes it so appealing. A 1.5-2 hour hike through forest and nature leads you to this impressive waterfall.

Le Brabant – the iconic mountain at Le Morne. The climb is certainly challenging, but the view from the top… simply breathtaking.
Grand Bassin Hindu Temple – a spiritual place surrounded by lush greenery, full of tranquility and positive energy. It's worth a visit and will show you a different side of Mauritius.
Enjoy the beaches – whether Pointe d'Esny, Bel Ombre, or Le Morne Beach, Mauritius has picture-perfect beaches. You should definitely plan a beach day!
Birdwatching – if you keep your eyes open, you can also discover colorful parrots and rare endemic bird species on almost every corner.
Slow down – sometimes it's enough to simply stop along the way, take a deep breath, and enjoy the moment. Mauritius has a special energy that you can feel as soon as you slow down a bit. Be inspired!

As soon as the wind returns, it's time to get back on the water – and often a "windless morning" turns into a perfect kitesurfing afternoon ;)
I hope you have fun on your next kite trip and who knows, maybe we'll see each other on the water soon?!
